PREFACE

So many people have contributed their time, advice, humor and expertise to this effort that it’s impossible to name them all. They have tirelessly accepted my phone calls and emails, long after they should have been ducking me. I am filled with gratitude for their friendship and

generosity.

As to the photographs, I have given credit wherever possible. Many enthusiasts have shared unmarked photos with me over the years, way before I had any idea of telling my story. Some have been used here because they are wonderful depictions of the era. I hope these contributors

will accept my heartfelt thanks when they see I have included their work for its historical value.
